Texas Tech is better than U.

 The Red Raiders pulled the upset of the year beating the No. 1 ranked Texas Longhorns Saturday night in a bar fight of a football game that any fan of college football surely enjoyed. The Red Raider’s victory was secured with a final second touchdown that had all of Texas and the rest of the nation on the edge of their seats.

The win catapulted Texas Tech to No.2 in the BCS standings.

The upset threw the entire BCS standings into uproar. Benefiting a few, and sending others tumbling down the steps. The number one beneficiary of this historic Saturday was the Alabama Crimson Tide.

Alabama, who routed Arkansas State 35-0, have not held the top spot in the nation since 1992 when the Tide won the school’s last championship under coach Gene Stallings. Alabama faces LSU on Saturday as their first defense of their No. 1 status.

A dormant Penn State stayed the same at No. 3, and Florida moved to No. 4 after an impressive win against Georgia . Texas dropped to No. 5. But the Red Raiders are the real story.

Texas Tech, who has never broken the BCS top 5 before, nonetheless has a legacy of toughness. Coach Mike Leach is known as the “Mad Scientist” for the play calling concoctions he throws at opponents. Known as a very pass heavy offensive coach, Leach has coached 3 of the 7 college Quarterbacks who have thrown for more than 5000 yards in their college careers.

The Red Raider’s Quarterback Graham Harrell, who went 36 for 53 and 474 yards in Tech’s victory over the Longhorns, is now considered a front runner for the Heisman Trophy. Texas ’ Colt McCoy held the distinction before the loss.

Perhaps the most incredible story surrounding the Texas Tech Red Raiders this season is that of kicker Matt Williams. Williams who took the field and kicked a 30 yard field goal to win a month free rent a few games ago, was contacted in the stands by Mike Leach and asked to join the team. Leach was disgusted after a short history of awful kickers this season and was willing to try anything, even pulling a contest winner out of the stands and slapping a uniform on him. Williams has since gone 2 for 3 in field goals and 13 points after in two games.

The Red Raiders seem to have it all together, and man are they fun to watch! Fast, aggressive, furious and devoted. This team has heart. It will be interesting to see how the rest of the season and the Bowl game scenario turns out for the Red Raiders. But rest assured, there isn’t a single football team in the nation that wants to go anywhere near Lubbock on a Saturday.
